5 Things You Must Do In Canon Beach

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw we visited Canon Beach recently. This was our first time in Oregon and we absolutely fell in love. I wanted to share some of my favorite things about Canon Beach for those of you planning a visit!

It’s no secret I love a good cup of coffee. Even more, I love trying new coffee shops. During our stay in Canon Beach, Mark and I made our way to Insomnia Coffee Co. and I fell in love. Not only is the coffee amazing, the shop is absolutely adorable. I ordered an iced lavender latte (my favorite) and it was incredible. Highly recommend it!

This was the highlight of our trip by far. I love all things ocean and have been dying to go whale watching for years. When we stumbled upon the Whale Research EcoExcursions, we knew we had to book it ASAP. This tour was absolutely perfect. The company that puts on the tour is run by marine biologists, so they were extremely well educated. The tour guides knew every whale by name! This tour took place on a small raft boat and lasted an hour and a half. We saw a whale within the first five minutes of the tour and over the next hour and a half, ended up seeing eight to nine different whales. I definitely plan to do this tour again next time we visit.

Haystack Rock is just as cool in person as it is in pictures. This iconic rock is absolutely enormous and so cool to see up close. There are several tide pools surrounding it also, with some marine life to check out. During sunset, the beach fills up with everyone wanting to take in this incredible view. We spent a couple nights hanging out by the rock while the sun set. It really does feel like a scene from a movie! (Ps you may recognize this rock from The Goonies.)

Mark and I like to have one nice dinner whenever we go on vacation. When in Canon Beach, we chose The Wayfarer for that meal. This restaurant is a Canon Beach staple and has the most magnificent views. I would highly recommend making reservations if you’re planning to go around sunset as it fills up quickly. There is a great patio also, so definitely take advantage of that if you can. The restaurant’s menu changes regularly, so you’re only getting the freshest foods!

Even if you’re not an outdoorsy person, hiking Ecola State Park is a great way to spend a few hours in Canon Beach. We were there on Labor Day weekend, so I’m sure it was more crowded than normal, but we definitely had trouble parking and had to find a parking lot nearby and hike up. The trail was gorgeous and difficult enough for me to work up a sweat. However, there were many children and elderly people hiking as well, so it’s definitely doable no matter what your fitness level. If you’re unable to hike for any reason, you can also drive to the top and take advantage of the overview.

We absolutely loved our time in Canon Beach and are definitely planning to go back. There are so many things we just didn’t have the time to do, so I’m already putting together a list for next time. If you’ve been to Canon Beach and have additional suggestions about what to do, I’d love to hear them!
